Reception, Friday, August 3, 6-9 pm

By Jenn Reidel
Painter Mary Rothermel’s current work on display at the Blue Heron Gallery in August is a visual journal of her travels through Tasmania and Victoria in southeastern Australia. She will also show paintings of her travels more close to her home on Vashon— views of Dockton and Burton Peninsula and more.

She paints landscapes, both urban and rural, “My landscapes are an invented realism. I often combine elements from several photographs. It is the way I want to remember them.” She also has an interest in historical buildings and lighthouses. She paints them as a way of honoring the old.

Rothermel received a degree in printmaking from the University of Washington in 1978 and has lived on Vashon since 1988 with her husband in a house designed after Monet’s.
